1. Create a Schedule and Stick to It
Develop a formal schedule with all of your commitments – classes, work, kids if you have them and of course, homework. Protect this time like an appointment you can’t cancel..
Use tools that work for you, whether that’s a physical planner, wall calendar or app.
2. Prioritize Tasks
Organize your commitments based on what matters most. One effective method is the “Eisenhower matrix,” which puts tasks into four categories:
- Urgent and important
- Less urgent but important
- Urgent but less important
- Less important and less urgent
Another option is to write a simple to-do list of tasks and deadlines, putting critical tasks at the top.
3. Break Down Big Projects
If something is too big to do all at once, divide it into manageable steps. Maybe you’ll outline that paper today and write the rough draft tomorrow. Put each step in your calendar and don’t let yourself procrastinate.
4. Use Time Blocking or Pomodoro
These time management methods give you a more structured view of your day. With time blocking, you divide your day into chunks of time, each scheduled for a specific task.
With the Pomodoro technique, you commit to working for a set period, traditionally 25 minutes, and then take a five-minute break. These methods, used alone or in combination, can help you use your time well.
5. Eliminate Distractions
When it’s time to study, put everything else away. Keep your phone out of sight. Disable social media apps on your laptop and remove distracting clutter from your study area.
6. Stay Organized
Speaking of clutter, study time is more efficient when you have everything nearby. Know what you need and organize your desk space so it’s in reach.
7. Build Routines
Organization applies to your time, too. Try to make your study time consistent from week to week, so you don’t waste mental energy remembering that you have to do it. Do the same with other necessary but time-flexible tasks, such as working out or cleaning the kitchen.
8. Take Breaks and Rest
Quality sleep is vital for student success. Establish a bedtime and stick to it. Don’t work sunup to sundown, either. Take breaks when you feel yourself getting fatigued. Burnout is dangerous and more of a time thief than breaks could ever be.
9. Ask for Help When You Need It
Schools and educational programs have student support teams to keep you on track. For example, as a MedCerts student, you have access to Student Success Advisors and Career Coaches who are in your corner.
10. Be Flexible and Kind to Yourself
Life happens. Adjust your plan and schedule as needed, and give yourself credit when things go well. Remember, while time management strategies for students are valuable resources, the right program is paramount. At MedCerts, flexible online programs and a strong student support network are designed to keep you on track to achieve your educational goals.
