When thinking about the transition to civilian life, you may be considering a boost to the resume by taking advantage of low or no-cost cybersecurity training while in the military. Flex learning models make it possible to be enlisted and learn new skills.

Cybersecurity training is one of the most sought-after programs for post-military life for great reasons. This is a rapidly growing industry, with more than 700,000 open positions in 2022, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With the number of jobs expected to grow 35% by 2031, there is a great future in this industry.

Members of the U.S. Armed Forces are often eligible for training funds that pay for certification programs, typically called “credentialing assistance” or “COOL” programs. When those courses are available online through flexible learning paths, it’s possible to prepare for a new career in cybersecurity while serving the country from anywhere in the world.

What Is Flex Learning?

Flex learning is a modern way of gaining skills and certificates for a variety of industries. Also called remote learning, flex learning allows you to attend courses during times that work for your individual schedule so long as you have access to a computer and an internet connection.

This is especially important for military personnel, who sometimes have a permanent change of station (PCS) in the middle of a course. When your course is part of a flexible learning path, a PCS is no problem.

Some flex learning institutions, like MedCerts, are approved as partners with the U.S. Department of Defense Credentialing Assistance programs for the Army, Coast Guard and Air Force. Many classes can be completely covered by up to $4,000 in credentialing assistance.

A Closer Look: Flex Learning for Cybersecurity
