For military spouses, the MyCAA program can be a game-changer. And at MedCerts, we offer MyCAA-approved programs that are accessible no matter where your spouse’s military service takes you. First, what does MyCAA stand for?

MyCAA stands for the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) program.

So what is the MyCAA program?

Sponsored by the Department of Defense, MyCAA is a component of the DoD’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program, and its purpose is to assist eligible military spouses in pursuing the skills they need to find gainful employment in high-demand, high-growth portable career fields and occupations.

Exactly what does the MyCAA program pay for?

Per their official website, the MyCAA program “only pays for tuition for credentials, certificates, or Associate degrees with a specified concentration or major and examinations leading to a recognized license or industry certification.”

So how much money are we talking about here?

MyCAA offers up to $4,000 in financial assistance, in $2,000 increments per fiscal year.

Are there any strings attached?

There are. The funding must be used over three years to pay for your training. You can use the money to pay for tuition, licensing, and certification fees. However, the money does not apply to other items like books, electronic devices, childcare, uniforms, etc.

Who qualifies to receive MyCAA funding?

You’re eligible if you’re the spouse of an active duty service member in pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, or O-1 to O-2, and able to start and finish your coursework while your spouse is on Title 10 military orders. Spouses married to members of the National Guard and Reserve Components (in the same pay grades listed above) are also eligible.

Wait, will utilizing MyCAA affect my spouse’s G.I. Bill?

Not at all, and this is one of the biggest misconceptions around MyCAA. You can apply for funding without worrying about impacting your spouse’s benefits.
