How Changes in Pharmacy Standards and Regulations are Impacting Employers

Interested in a low-cost talent solution for your organization?

Allied Health careers are one of the most in-demand jobs in the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics – the Job Outlook for Pharmacy Technicians, in the next 8 years, is growing 5% faster than any other occupation. Additionally, according to the American Institute of Medical Sciences & Education (AIMS) – A Pharmacy Technician career is one of the top-paying Allied Health Careers.

Nearly every pharmacy across the country struggles to fill their (pharmacy) technician talent pipeline. The industry’s average turnover rate is in the upper 20%’s. Vacancy costs are affecting the efficiency and bottom line of pharmacies.

How are changes in pharmacy standards impacting employers?

Well, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) announced that effective January 1, 2020, any (pharmacy) technician interested in becoming Nationally Certified, must complete a PTCB approved training program. This new mandate is a HUGE step towards standardizing training for the industry.

The National Community Pharmacists Association performed a case study identifying the return on investments for training your pharmacy staff. Utilizing e-learning tools to train the staff and verify competency resulted in saving millions of dollars in employee training costs. Additionally, requiring technician staff to go through a training program and become nationally certified resulted in higher quality staff and increased efficiency for the pharmacy.

Some employers fear that this change will make recruiting talent an even bigger burden on HR teams. There is a solution! I’m happy to share, MedCerts fully ONLINE Pharmacy Technician training programs meet the PTCB’s CPhT Program Recognition Attestation requirements.
