How to Stay Motivated to Study for Online Summer Programs










Let’s face it: studying during the summer can be a bit challenging. After all, who wants to study when the sun is shining and everyone else is outside enjoying the warm weather? The struggle to stay motivated to study when it seems like everyone else is having fun is real. 

If you’re finding it hard to stay motivated, know you aren’t alone. Studies have found that over half of online students say motivation is their biggest obstacle. Fortunately, there are things you can do. Here are six tips on how to stay motivated to study for your online program this summer.

1. Choose a Time to Study That Works Best for You

One of the great things about online programs is that you have the freedom and flexibility to study whenever and wherever you want. Choose times that work best for you and stick to them. Consider adding your study sessions to your calendar or writing them down on visible sticky notes to help you stay on track. And don’t forget to include breaks for summer fun, too.

2. Set Mini Goals (and Reward Yourself for Hitting Them)

Rather than trying to finish an entire course in a week, break your work into smaller goals. Then reward yourself each time you hit one, whether it’s an episode of your favorite show or a tasty snack. While they might not seem like much, these small treats can be powerful motivators for getting things done. For bigger milestones, consider planning larger rewards, such as a weekend beach trip, to keep yourself inspired. 

3. Use a Visual Progress Tracker

Tools like to-do lists make it easier to keep track of what you need to do. Even better, crossing off completed tasks and seeing your progress can be quite satisfying. 

4. Study In Short Bursts

Consider the Pomodoro technique. Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus on a specific task. When the timer goes off, give yourself a brief five-minute break.  Repeat this process up to four times. These shorter study intervals can help you stay focused, increase productivity and reduce stress, making it easier to stay motivated.

5. Connect With an Advisor for Support
