Personal Caregiver + Mental Health: A New Hybrid Program

It’ll train you to use specialized skills, empathy and healthcare system knowledge to support your patients’ physical, mental and emotional care.  

What Skills Will You Gain?

This 19-week program is geared toward individuals with a passion to become a personal caregiver or mental health aide while creating a safe and supportive care environment. From assisting with daily living activities to handling crisis care, mental health and professional caregivers are a vital part of any healthcare team. 

You’ll learn how to:

  • Monitor and record patients’ behavioral and health changes.
  • Assist with psychiatric and substance abuse treatments.
  • Build open communication and strong patient relationships.
  • Assess mental health and memory conditions for support and de-escalation.
  • Work with healthcare staff in diverse settings.
  • Help patients maintain independence through activities of daily living.

What Does the Program Cover?

The Mental Health and Personal Caregiver program is divided into four courses:

  • PS-1011: Professionalism in Allied Health: This two-week course focuses on the soft skills needed to maintain a professional patient relationship. Training will range from patient and coworker interactions to emotional and interpersonal skills and medical ethics.
  • HI-1014: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology: Over six weeks, you will learn the major body systems and health conditions people experience, along with common medical terms used in patient treatment.
  • HI-7013: Fundamentals of Mental Health Care: In this six-week course, you’ll learn about the history of mental health specialists and how to recognize psychiatric illnesses, disabilities and mental health disorders. It will also focus on behavior modifications, intake care and memory care training, along with medical law and pharmacology.
  • HI-7016: Fundamentals of Personal Care and Residential Caregiving: Over five weeks, you’ll learn how to support, manage and communicate with patients at home and in residential care facilities. 

Mental Health and Personal Caregiver Certifications

After completing this exciting MedCerts program, you’ll be ready to take two exams for caregiving and mental health/memory care certifications, the Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) certification from the National Center for Competency Testing, and the Mental Health Technician Certification (MHTC) from the American Medical Certification Association. MedCerts covers the cost of these exams.

What Are the Enrollment Requirements? 

To enroll in the Mental Health and Personal Caregiver, you must have a high school diploma or GED and a valid email address, along with a computer connected to high-speed internet. As with other MedCerts programs, this course focuses on interactive simulations and task-based material, so your computer must also have a built-in or external microphone.
