What Certifications Should I Get For IT?

Talk to a MedCerts Education Consultant Today

The certifications you get should be based on the type of work that you want to do. CompTIA certifications include: A+ for those who want to do administrative and helpdesk work related to hardware and devices; Network+ for those who want to focus on wired and wireless networking; and Security+ for those who want to focus primarily on the security of networks and preventing cyber-attacks. Though it is not necessary to acquire all these certifications, it is encouraged if you are interested in making yourself a more attractive candidate to potential employers.

All of the entry-level CompTIA certifications will help you get a job in the industry, but the different focuses also relate to different soft skills. CompTIA A+ employees are more likely to work hands-on with end-users, fixing their devices and training them. CompTIA Network+ employees are more likely to work with the physical architecture of the network, setting up networks and even running cabling. CompTIA Security+ employees are highly-focused, detail-oriented individuals who will usually be paid more — but will need to be responsible for securing networks and devices.

When filling positions for IT jobs, many employers seek candidates with at least an A+ or Network+ certification, but Security+ is also becoming a very popular discipline. MedCerts offers the option to save money on multiple certifications by bundling them into dual-certification training programs. For example, enrolling in our IT HelpDesk Administrator program (a Network+/A+ dual-certification program) would save you $1400 more than you would if you were to enroll in them separately.
