Who Is Eligible for the WIOA Program?
Like all government assistance programs, WIOA has limitations regarding eligibility. However, most unemployed individuals who could benefit from additional training or education likely qualify. You must be at least 14 years old and either a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the U.S.
Qualified applicants must have been terminated or laid off from their job—or they must have received notice that they will be. Eligible applicants may also qualify for unemployment compensation. Priority is given to veterans and their spouses.
WIOA is designed to benefit dislocated or laid-off workers and some WIOA-funded programs are specifically for low-income individuals. Groups who qualify for and may apply for WIOA funds include:
- Homemakers that have lost their primary source of income
- Workers in a facility that is closing down soon
- Self-employed individuals such as farmers who have faced natural disasters or unfavorable economic conditions
What Does WIOA Funding Pay For?
WIOA funding provides up to $4,000 in financial aid for those participating in a certification training program. It is possible for the funding to extend to two years, but courses must provide training for specific occupations and careers with hourly rates, salaries, and full-time employment opportunities. A career in health care and information technology qualifies, but an associate in general studies or liberal arts—for instance—does not.
It is important to research the local and regional labor market to identify viable employment opportunities. You can work with career advisors to gain the tools you need from a WIOA-funded career training program to launch into a new, rewarding career.
How Do You Apply for WIOA Funding?
You can start by visiting one of the more than 2,400 American Job Centers throughout the United States or check the Department of Labor website. Case managers can assist by ensuring applicants are eligible for and aware of the different career options available with WIOA funding. You should be sure to have all the paperwork and identification documents prepared before beginning the application process.
Like any career placement program, the WIOA cannot guarantee a job. But with the help of dedicated case managers, you will be better positioned for success. This program can help fund the education and training needed to help you be the most competitive in your efforts to return to work.
