What You Should Know About the ITF+ to Tech+ Certification Transition

One of the only certainties in the world of tech is change. The skills you need to succeed constantly evolve as new tools and programs emerge. This ongoing shift is reflected in the certifications that employers seek from IT professionals.

In response to these changing demands, CompTIA is retiring its IT Fundamentals+ (ITF+) certification and introducing a new Tech+ certification. Tech+ will provide more relevant, modern foundational IT training that better suits the needs of today’s businesses.

Details About the Change

The Tech+ certification will officially replace ITF+ on July 31, 2025. It’s been updated to provide entry-level IT professionals a broader skill set, including cybersecurity, digital literacy and the importance of data in decision-making. In light of this change, MedCerts is updating its Fundamentals of IT program to align with Tech+  requirements and prepare students for the Tech+ certification exam.

What the Tech+ Certification Covers

The Tech+ certification covers the foundational skills needed to launch a career in tech. It’s an ideal starting point for entry-level roles and can be a stepping stone to more advanced positions, such as those in cybersecurity or cloud architecture.

The exam focuses on six major areas:

  • Tech concepts and terminology: This covers the basics of computing, common terminology and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Infrastructure: This includes navigating network systems and internal components, including cloud computing, wireless networks and other infrastructure essentials.
  • Applications and software: This section covers topics such as operating systems, productivity software and artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Software development concepts: Tech+ includes information about programming languages and data types.
  • Data and database fundamentals: This highlights the value of data, basic database concepts and how data is used.
  • Security: This section covers essential security topics such as authentication, device protection and encryption.

Who Is the Tech+ Certification For?

The Fundamentals of IT program is ideal for individuals who want to begin a career in tech but have little or no background in the field. It’s an ideal starting point, whether you’re transitioning from a non-tech industry or beginning your career. This program will give you a solid foundation in IT basics and qualify you for positions such as Helpdesk Technician, IT Analyst or Technical and Software Support Specialist. It’s also a great first step toward more advanced certifications such as CompTIA A+ and Network+.

How This Change Benefits Learners

The updated curriculum for the Tech+ certification focuses on real-world skills that reflect the needs of today’s businesses. Throughout your studies, you’ll gain practical, in-demand skills that can help you stand out in a competitive job market.

The MedCerts Fundamentals of IT program will continue to offer our proprietary IT Professional Skills, and Ethics in the Age of AI course, where you’ll also learn the soft skills to succeed in an IT environment and how to manage AI effectively, to ensure you’ll be prepared to excel in your career from day one.
