One career pathway many military spouses may consider is in healthcare. With funding available through MyCAA, phlebotomy may be a great option for you to explore. A Phlebotomy Technician collects blood and non-blood specimens for testing and analysis in clinical laboratories. This career path offers portable opportunities, like pursuing the path of a mobile/travel phlebotomist.
It’s also one of the most in-demand healthcare professions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Phlebotomy Technician positions are expected to grow by 26% by 2026.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you launch a phlebotomy career with MyCAA funding.
Steps to Become a Phlebotomy Technician
Ready to launch your new career in medicine and science with MyCAA? Start here:
Step 1: Enroll in a MyCAA-approved program
To receive your MyCAA benefits, you’ll need to enroll in an academic institution approved as a vendor by the Department of Defense. MedCerts is an approved, online, flexible learning platform that prepares you for in-demand jobs like a Phlebotomy Technician.
When you connect with a MedCerts MyCAA Education Consultant, you’ll receive support and guidance to ensure you’re eligible and on the path toward certification.
Step 2: Complete the required coursework and hands-on training
MedCerts offers a 12-week, self-paced course that fits your busy life — you can take a break when needed. You won’t have to worry about traveling to a traditional school setting. Instead, you can complete your training with flexibility from wherever you are. Program materials and the exam cost are included in the course, so you won’t have to worry about paying extra.
Step 3: Pass the certification exam
Once you’ve completed your coursework and training, you’ll be ready to take the CPT exam offered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA). You’ll also need to complete a minimum of 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live patients within 90 days of passing the CPT exam.
MedCerts can assist you in preparing for your search for the in-person experience necessary to obtain full certification.
Step 4: Find a job as a certified phlebotomist
The final step is the most exciting! After completing your coursework and certification, it’s time to update your resume with your newly acquired hard and soft skills and begin applying for jobs.
MedCerts helps you make those resume updates, prep for interviews and can even connect you with a network of healthcare employers who are ready to hire. Talk to your Student Services expert to start putting your education into action.
