Military Side Hustles: Use CA to Earn More While On Active Duty

If you are a member of the Army or Army National Guard, you can use military benefits to access better-paying, portable opportunities instead of unskilled side hustles. Typical side jobs like DoorDash, pet sitting or landscaping offer flexibility and extra income, but aren’t the foundation of a long-term career.

The military offers assistance for service members pursuing professional credentials. You can apply CA benefits to a range of certification pathways, including MedCerts’ healthcare and IT credentials. Earning professional credentials lets you work in high-demand fields immediately. With higher hourly pay compared to typical side hustles, you could also take advantage of remote and per diem scheduling in competitive fields.

Read on to learn how you can use CA to build real earning potential with skill-based side jobs for active-duty military professionals.

Army Credentialing Assistance (CA)

As of 2025, the Credentialing Assistance program covers up to $2,000 per fiscal year toward the cost of training, study materials, textbooks, manuals, test fees, recertification and maintenance of professional credentials. Be sure to check the funding cap at ArmyIgnitED or the Education Center for the latest guidelines.

MedCerts is an approved CA training provider, and we offer credentials in the high-demand healthcare sector, as well as IR and business administration. Our self-paced online programs are ideal for active-duty soldiers who need flexible scheduling.

Best Side Hustles You Can Strengthen With CA-Funded Certifications

All side hustles must comply with command policies regarding second jobs for active duty military, and you must schedule all training and working hours off-duty. Besides those common-sense guidelines, you can explore a wide range of gig work.

IT & Cybersecurity

IT and cybersecurity are growing fields, with high-paying opportunities for part and full-time work. You can use CA funding to pursue certifications like CompTIA ITF+, A+, Network+ and Security+.

Healthcare & Allied Health

If you are interested in careers in healthcare professions, consider certifications in Medical Billing & Coding, Phlebotomy Technician, Patient Care Tech or Pharmacy Technician.

Business, Admin & Project Skills

Certifications in project management and administrative support, along with Army leadership experience, position you for lucrative freelance admin, project coordination or documentation gigs.

Using Your New Certification

Once you have completed a program and earned your certification, you can start looking for opportunities to work in your new field.

·  Create an online portfolio: Set up a website or social media account listing your qualifications and availability.

·  Build a network: Connect with friends, family, neighbors or local businesses to offer your services and generate references.

·  Set personal goals: Decide what you want to accomplish with your credential (extra income, career development, future educational attainment) and make a plan to achieve it.

How to Apply for CA to Support Your Side Hustle Goals

If you are applying for CA for the first time, you’ll need to follow the steps outlined through Army COOL:

·  Watch the CA 101 Video.

·  Complete the MilGears Plan and upload it to ArmyIgnitED.

·  Contact a CA Counselor to let them know you have completed both steps.

Before you commit to outside work, make sure you are compliant with all applicable rules. Always obtain command approval for outside employment. Any side hustle must be fully off-duty and cannot use government equipment or position. Provide all necessary documentation for any work outside gigs.

You can learn more about the rules for outside work by checking the unit policy with your legal office or Education Center.
