WIOA Program
The Department of Labor and Department of Education created WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) to help remove barriers for those who have trouble finding a high-quality career. The WIOA program helps job seekers acquire industry-recognized credentials for in-demand jobs and provides the opportunity to leave the cycle of unemployment and into long-lasting careers.
Workforce Funding.
- Who Funds the WIOA Grant? The Dept. of Labor and the Dept. of Education
- How do I Find Out If I’m Eligible? Funds are distributed through American Job Centers (AJC), you can check eligibility here.
- How much is available per person: This depends on a few factors – including what state/region you live in, how much funding is allocated to your AJC.

Workforce Eligibility
Age 14 and older
Low income or eligible for government benefits
Dislocated workers
Plant/factory closures, layoffs, homemaker that lost primary income
Terminated or laid off, OR received notice of termination/layoff AND
Is eligible for or has exhausted entitlement to unemployment compensation; OR Is employed at a facility in which the employer has announced the facility will close w/in 180 days
Self-employed individuals that are unemployed
Farmers, ranchers, and fisherman who are unemployed due to economic conditions or natural disaster

Workforce Approved Schools
Schools approved to accept WIOA funding will need to be on the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL). Each state has it’s own list and requirements. To find more information about approved schools, visit benefits.gov, or reach out to your local American Job Center. When choosing a school it’s important to consider how it will fit in with your life. Consider online programs that work within your schedule and offer student support.
Workforce Approved Programs.
The WIOA grant provides funding for career training. When choosing a program you should be looking for short-term training for in-demand industries. Credentials are a great option because they typically only require 4 to 6 months of training and a certification exam. Credentials are also stackable, allowing you to build upon them and quickly grow your career.
