After serving as an Army Combat Medic, transitioning to civilian life can feel overwhelming. The good news is your military medical skills are in demand with MOS 68W civilian jobs and can lead to stable healthcare roles with the right training. Here are seven civilian careers available through MedCerts training, perfect for combat medics.

1. Medical Assistant 

A medical assistant role is a natural transition for your 68W skills. From assisting with minor procedures to recording patient histories and handling administrative tasks, these essential workers use specialized skills to support the healthcare team.

MedCerts’ 28-week Medical Assistant career pathway prepares you for certification as a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) or a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

2. Patient Care Technician 

Working directly with patients can be incredibly rewarding. Build on your experience by training as a patient care technician. In this position, you’ll monitor patients’ vitals, provide daily care, perform blood draws and support a variety of procedures. 

The 24-week MedCerts Patient Care Technician program ends with certification as a Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT)Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or Certified EKG Technician (CET).

3. Phlebotomy Technician 

Among other core skills, your military service trained you in specimen collection and lab prep. This essential training can lead to fulfilling combat medic civilian jobs, such as phlebotomy technicians. Phlebotomy technicians work in various clinical and community health settings to collect blood and non-blood samples for medical evaluation.

MedCerts’ Phlebotomy Technician course runs 12 weeks and culminates in the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam.

4. EKG Technician 

If you handled medical equipment as part of your combat medic work, consider becoming an EKG technician. 5. Pharmacy Technician

6. Medical Billing & Coding Specialist

7. Sterile Processing Technician or Surgical Technologist 

For 68Ws with surgical support and procedural experience, careers like sterile processing technician or surgical technologist are a natural fit. Sterile processing technicians clean, sterilize and store essential surgical equipment, while surgical technologists assemble supplies, prep operating rooms and assist during procedures.
