Is Short-Term Online Career Training Right for You?

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of patients but aren’t sure about providing direct care? If you’re detail-oriented, responsible and committed to doing things right—a career as a medical billing specialist could fit for you.

Medical billing specialists work in a variety of settings, from private doctor’s offices to hospitals. They create, submit and review reimbursement claims and make sure that records match patients’ diagnoses and treatments.

You don’t need any experience in billing or healthcare to get started. In as little as 12 weeks, you could complete MedCerts’s Medical Billing Specialist program and get a certification.

Skills Required of Medical Billing Specialists

In addition to the skills taught in the MedCerts program, a medical billing specialist needs to have:

  • Communication skills. Billing specialists need to be clear yet sensitive when speaking with patients about topics like medical care and finance.

  • Flexibility. Medical billers need to be able to break a topic down and explain it to a layperson or talk about it in-depth with an insurance professional.

  • Organization. People in this profession need to keep track of multiple bills at different stages of completion and find the right information in the right place.

Advantages of Being a Medical Billing Specialist

Medical billing is a promising career field. Its growth rate is far above the average, adding as many as 29,000 jobs by 2029. Medical billers are in-demand across the healthcare field. If there’s a specialty that interests you—cancer care, for example—you’ll find medical billers working in that field.

The median salary of medical billers is more than $33,000 per year, and you don’t need a college degree to get started. It’s an ideal stepping-stone career that can prepare you for more advanced roles in healthcare administration, from claims processing to medical coding management and auditing.

According to ZipRecruiter, medical auditors earn an average of nearly $95,000 a year.

About Our Medical Billing Specialist Training Program

With MedCerts, you can take your first steps in the medical billing field in as few as 12 weeks. The Medical Billing Specialist program teaches the regulations that apply to medical billing, including the major coding systems.

Students in the program learn all essential steps of the medical billing process, from how to submit insurance claims to payment adjudication and resubmission. The focus is always on practical application, so students walk away knowing how to prepare and submit claims correctly.

The program consists of two core courses:

  • Introduction to Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology

  • Insurance and Billing and Coding Essentials

Each course is designed to be six weeks long, but there’s plenty of flexibility.

When a student completes the course, they qualify to apply for a Medical Coder and Biller Certification (MCBC) through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
