How MOS Experience Maps to Civilian IT Certifications
Several MOS codes or army positions transfer well to civilian IT certifications, including MOS 25B, 17C and 25U. There are typically few gaps between these positions and civilian certifications, and often, all you need is an exam prep course.
For instance, an MOS 25B IT Specialist handles operating and maintaining computer systems and networks in the office and sometimes in the field. It involves foundational IT, network, hardware and software skills, and it transfers well to civilian IT support or systems administrator roles.
Similarly, a 17C Cyber Operations Specialist position handles using programs, devices and techniques to assess potential cyber threats and weaknesses, either internally or for enemy targets. Comparable civilian jobs include IT management, systems admin and cybersecurity.
Finally, the 25U position installs and manages the IT used for Army radio systems and manages IP-based radio and comms systems. In this role, you might also troubleshoot local area networks, routers and field comms systems. 25U skills translate well into civilian help desk roles, network operations and telecommunications.
These positions and skills all map well to civilian IT certifications, including:
- CompTIA Security+
- CompTIA Network+
- CCNA
- CompTIA Linux+
- CompTIA CySA+
- CISSP
IT Certifications Worth Pursuing With Army CA
Pursuing these credentials can smooth the transition from Army MOS to civilian jobs, and it’s possible to get Army credentialing assistance in IT. For instance, CompTIA A+ is a foundational entry-level credential for networking, software and operating systems and the first place to start your certifications. It’s a good fit for soldiers with a general IT support background.
Network+ is another foundational certification for basic networking concepts and tools, whether wired or wireless. It includes connectivity, configuration, cloud and virtual networking and lines up well with MOS roles in signals and communications.
Additionally, CompTIA Security+ is one of the most in-demand IT certifications in the civilian industry. The credential demonstrates your ability to secure networks, apps and devices and maintain data integrity and confidentiality. MOS roles in cybersecurity or intelligence systems are a good fit with this certification.
