Talk to a MyCAA Education Consultant Today

To all the military spouses, thank you for your service! It takes a special person to be a military spouse — from the frequent moving and months away from your spouse to not being able to have a career. Actually, that last part isn’t true – you can have a prosperous career if you choose a portable opportunity.

A portable career is a job that allows you to easily transition from one work location to another while keeping the same career. Careers in the healthcare and IT industries are in high demand, and these fields offer many portable career options.

Since you’re a military spouse, you may be eligible for the My Career Advancement Account Scholarship (MyCAA). MyCAA funding awards a total of $4000 in increments up to $2,000 per fiscal year in financial assistance for continuing education opportunities for military spouses, which could cover the entire cost of training for a new portable job.

MyCAA Funding Basics

MyCAA funding can be used to pay for licenses, certifications, or associate degrees for various career fields. To qualify for the MyCAA Scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Married to an active duty service member in one of these branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and National Guard on Title 10 orders.

  • The service member is in one of these pay grades: E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O -1 to O -2.

  • The spouse must complete the coursework while his or her military sponsor is on Title 10 military orders as reported in DEERS.

I‌n-demand Portable Careers for 2021‌

The medical field is rapidly growing. To meet this demand, MedCerts offers 30+ portable career options. The average cost of a MedCerts program is $4000 or less. This is great news for MyCAA recipients because the scholarship will pay for most or all of the cost. A few exciting and in-demand portable careers include:

  • Professional Coder: This is one of the most important positions in any medical facility. A professional coder needs to be able to read a medical chart and assign the correct diagnosis code. Without professional coders, doctors and medical facilities can’t get paid.

  • EKG Technician: An electrocardiograph technician performs cardiovascular tests on patients. This job offers a great career path for someone that likes to work with people and high-tech equipment.

  • Pharmacy Technician Professional (ASHP/ACPE): Pharmacists depend on pharmacy technicians to assist them with an abundance of important tasks. A few pharmacy technician duties may include: filling prescriptions, filing insurance claims and correctly labeling medications.

Being a military spouse doesn’t mean you can’t have a rewarding career of your own. Start foraging your path by applying for the MyCAA Scholarship. If you’re not sure what career path to choose, contact an education consultant. You can also browse the different MedCerts programs and take a quiz to see what program is a good fit for you. Finally, choose a certification program and begin your journey towards a rewarding portable career.
