What Is a Mental Health Support Worker?

These experts, also known as Mental Health Technicians or Psychiatric Assistants, play a pivotal role in managing individuals' emotional well-being. Mental Health Support workers provide compassionate support, therapy and care for those dealing with various mental health conditions. They're also responsible for managing patient records.

What To Expect in the Mental Health Support Professional Course

Our Mental Health Support programs both include comprehensive course content, designed to prepare you for a career in mental health. The Mental Health Support Specialist program is 14 weeks and provides all the essentials to begin your career. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn throughout the program:

  • Professionalism in Allied Health (32 hours): This module instills the core values needed to provide expert healthcare services, emphasizing communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Fundamentals of Mental Health Care (96 hours): The core of the program, this module covers the essentials of mental health, including diagnosis, treatment options and interventions.

  • Introduction to Human Anatomy and Medical Terms (96 hours): In this module, you'll gain an understanding of the human body and medical terminology, which is crucial for effective communication and patient care.

If you’re looking to get ahead in the competitive job market the Mental Health Support Professional program includes all the above courses plus our Electronic Health Records course – offering up an additional certification in just 18 weeks.

  • Electronic Health Records (64 hours): To keep up with the increasing importance of digital health records, this section will familiarize you with efficiently managing and maintaining electronic health records.

After the Program: Career Opportunities and Additional Certifications

Graduates of the Mental Health Support programs will be prepared for a rewarding career in a field with a growing demand for skilled professionals. The potential career opportunities include positions in mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals and community health centers. With a strong foundation in anatomy and mental health care, you'll be well-equipped to provide invaluable patient support.

Upon successful completion of either program, you can earn this essential certification:

  • Mental Health Technician Certification (MHTC): The American Medical Certification Association issues this credential to solidify your expertise in the field, making you a valuable and recognized asset in the mental health care sector.

Graduates of the Mental Health Support Professional program, will also be eligible for a second certification with the exam fees covered by MedCerts:

  • Electronic Health Record Specialist Certification (CEHRS): The National Healthcareer Association issues this certification, validating your proficiency in managing electronic health records, a highly sought-after skill in the healthcare industry.

Course Prerequisites

These programs are designed to be accessible, allowing individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue a fulfilling career in mental health support. To enroll, prospective students must be older than 18 and have a GED or high school diploma. The Mental Health Support Specialist program costs $2,500 and the Mental Health Support Professional costs $4,000, owing to the extensive curriculum and growing demand.
