What does a Medical Scribe do?

A Medical Scribe is a physician collaborator who fulfills the primary clerical and non-medical functions of the physician or practitioner. Primary functions of a Medical Scribe include:


  • Creating and maintaining patients' medical records
  • Documenting patient stories, physician interactions with the patients, the procedures performed, the results of laboratory studies and other pertinent information
  • Ordering laboratory/radiology studies
  • Assisting with patients' dispositions
  • Notifying the physician when studies are completed


Medical Scribes can be found in a variety of health/medical environments including traditional physician practices and hospitals as well as outpatient practices of neurosurgery, pediatric, internal medicine, ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiography, podiatry, behavioral care and many more.
